Silke Albrecht

born 1986 in Soest, lives and works in Düsseldorf

"The painting takes possession of the surface and reaches into the room. Silke Albrecht paints with ink, acrylic, oil, varnish, spray. She applies the paint with a brush, disperses it, pours it and lets it flow and sprays in individual places. Sometimes she grounds the cotton surfaces with colourless binder so that the texture remains visible. In her current paintings pure sections of color emerge as vibrant happenings with a presence that can hardly be grasped, grow apart and slide brightly over each other, solidify into abstract gradients, and then lie in front of each other again as soft fibrous veils.“
Thomas Hirsch, Malerei im Zustand der Auflösung, 2020

In her works, Silke Albrecht assembles a variety of materials on the canvas: while metal perforated grids or stitched jute bags structure the surfaces of some works, Albrecht uses items such as studio dirt and flower granules in her sediment works. The physical presence of these materials thus refers to both the form and content of her paintings. She also combines gestural paint application techniques such as splashing and spraying in these works.
In Albrecht's work, not only do diverse materials merge with one another, but a wide variety of styles also mix in her works. Pouring on cotton and copper brings processes and structures to the surface, foggy colour gradients sometimes transfigure the view. The eye wanders through a wide variety of layers and levels until it encounters realistic depictions and distances itself again. Albrecht's works draw the viewer in, inviting him to linger and reflect, her images developing reciprocally with increasing contemplation.
